A new study has identified a potential link between a typical nail salon tool and irreparable harm to DNA.
An alarming discovery published in PLOS ONE has revealed that UV-LED lamps utilized in nail salons can expose those in the vicinity to hazardous levels of ultraviolet radiation.
Although these devices pose a minor threat of inducing skin cancer, the researchers in the study describe that the degradation of DNA they bring about could give rise to germinating health difficulties as time goes by.
Professor David Leffell of the Yale School of Medicine sheds light on the dangerous nature of UV-LEDs, findings from a recent study indicating that these devices radiate exceptionally high levels of detrimental UV radiation for people’s health.
Despite the small chance of encountering skin cancer, the DNA damage incurred from the use of these devices has the potential to lead to health issues later on.
After subjecting six UV-LED lamps employed in nail salons to rigorous testing, Leffell and his squad ascertained that all of them were producing hazardous amounts of UV radiation.
The flickering bulbs gave off ultraviolet radiation at unnervingly high quantities, up to four times greater than the limit known to be harmless for humans.
Leffell warned that the level of the ultraviolet radiation was enough to wreak havoc on DNA and to put one’s health in harm’s way.
The researchers behind the study have indicated that further studies must be conducted to establish what the repercussions could be of exposed to UV-LED lighting in the long run.
For the present, it is recommended that people forgo usage of these devices.
Making it a priority to discover more about the potential long-term impacts of UV-LED lamps on health, Leffell declared that people must exercise caution and refrain from using them.
